New Zealand: Wrap-Up

We spent two weeks traveling around the South Island of New Zealand, and boy did we love it. We rented a camper van for the most epic road trip. Our expectations were completely exceeded when we saw how magnificent and otherwordly this place really is. Hands down, New Zealand is an underrated tourist destination. That’s part of what makes it so great– there aren’t corny tourists traps around every corner. It is one of our most beloved countries to date.

Here’s a recap of our time there.

New Zealand Budget Recap

budget recap

Our budget goal for our RTW trip is $100/day for two people. This is a generalization as some countries we know will be over this amount, while others will hopefully be below this goal. We knew New Zealand would be one of the most expensive countries, so we allocated more for this leg.

That Camper Van Life

We have been immensely enjoying our time spent road trippin’ the south island of New Zealand. This country is one of the most beautiful, most scenic places we have ever laid eyes on. Hands down, it’s one of the best places in the world. There is so much to see, so many places to hike and explore, that you could live here your entire life and still not see everything there is. It’s that great. We are sad that we only have 2 short weeks here, that isn’t enough to even scratch the surface of this amazing place.

The Day Our Van Broke Down

Before you begin- this is a very long story and probably isn’t all that interesting after the fact… but it does outline how travel can be both frustrating and amazing all at the same time.

I didn’t get much sleep last night. I was just so excited to begin our camper van adventure! We had been planning this leg of the trip for so long, and were so looking forward to renting a van and being out in the wide open spaces. We decided to rent from a family-run company who was not well advertised but seemed nice enough. The van didn’t have all of the new bells and whistles, but it was larger than than the majority and came equipped with a convertible bed, table, stove, and mini (very mini) fridge. Just what we needed. That morning, as soon as a I saw our  van, I was even more excited to get this show on the road (no pun intended). We got a quick briefing on the ins and outs and were off on our merry way…. or so we thought….

It’s Not Goodbye, It’s See You Later

It has been a whirlwind two weeks of saying goodbye. From long dinners with old friends to game nights with coworkers to an early thanksgiving with family, there is nothing like leaving the country and finding out just how much you are loved by those you have spent your life with.
We have been overwhelmed in the best way possible by the outpouring of love that has come from every nook and cranny in our life.

We would like to extend a sincere thank you to our friends and family who have graciously hosted our going away parties. They were all so lovely. We would like to say thank you to our friends in Orlando, the Garretts, who opened their homes to us the night before we departed. And, a final thank you goes out to Tanya and her lovely mother, Lisa, for picking us up in San Francisco and helping us make the best out of a crappy situation during a 10-hour layover. We are so grateful for the hospitality we have been shown.
