Peru: A Tiny Peak into South America

It was all worth it for this view

A little over a month ago we decided to travel south in anticipation of seeing a great wonder of the ancient world. Machu Picchu is on many people’s bucket lists, including ours. If you love history, chances are you love the mystery behind this great Incan wonder. For me, the huge appeal to MP is the great mystery of it all. It begs the question, “Just what exactly is this place?”. Who knows? That’s the best part. That’s what I love so much about history.

Desolate Beauty

Let me tell you, it was a journey for us to get to this place. While we did not hike the traditional Inca Trail due to permit restrictions, we decided on doing an easier (or so I thought) and shorter hike through the Sacred Valley to Ollantaytambo. We then took the train to Aguas Caliente to spend the night and make it up to MP before the sunrise.  When choosing trains, I highly recommend the Vistadome by PeruRail. The views were incredible and it was such a nice ride. We trekked with Alpaca Expeditions, who came highly rated on the trusty Trip Advisor. This was our first major trek, and it was an adventure to say the least. I, unfortunately, got a bad case of what I refer to as “Alpaca’s Revenge” aka food poisoning.  I’ll spare you the details, but just so you know there are no restrooms to find relief in the middle of the Andes. And so that happened. It was certainly the most physically demanding thing I’ve ever completed, but the sense of accomplishment upon reaching our destination was unparalleled.

We made it!!!!!
